When Soccer and Cycling Don't Mix
What a beautiful ride today. I got 45 miles in and at least 15 cups. My legs felt fresh as I pushed myself to the limits through Golden Gate Park post Ocean Beach. Starting off by 5:10am was no picnic but well worth it. But notice, I didn't make the news. No angry clashes with motorists, no close calls with pedestrians. Why? Common sense riding.
I don't know the full story of what happened. But what I do know breaks my heart as a soccer dad myself. A pair of kids walking to their first soccer game of the season were run over by a speeding cyclist. This happened on a weekend. There is just no reason for a bike to be speeding by kids. Just a few months ago I had to hear about a cyclist yelling at 4th graders on the bridge. Seriously now, we need to behave and ride with common sense.
I know it's always a few bad apples that ruin it for the rest of us. I can assure you that chatter was a plenty over social media and Strava. We were all sharing the news, disgusted, and reminding each other to slow down especially when kids are around.
I hope the children heal quickly. As for the reputation of cyclists riding in Mill Valley, well we got some work to do.
